Ransome and Evgenia in boat
New and expanded Arthur Ransome room

Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry

Arthur Ransome is best known as the children's author who wrote the Swallows & Amazons series of books. His varied and interesting life as fisherman, sailor, journalist and perhaps even spy is explored in our new and expanded Arthur Ransome room.

Many items on display have come from the Museum's archive generously given by Ransome's second wife, Evgenia Shelapina, who was working as Trotsky's secretary when Ransome met her in Russia. They include the first book that he wrote at the age of six and sketchbooks for the Swallows and Amazons series.

Join us on Wednesday 4 March at 2pm for a chance to have a look at the new Arthur Ransome room and to view a small number of objects from our stores. This event is free with admission.

Could you be a Blackwell Project Volunteer?

We are developing fresh approaches at Blackwell to enrich our visitors' experience. This is known as the Blackwell Project and will result in new Arts & Crafts furniture and objects on display, the reinstatement of the Master bedroom, an exhibition space exploring the Arts & Crafts movement, external signs highlighting the beauty of the setting and landscape, more interpretation to assist visitors and a fuller exhibition and events programme. The success of this project lies in working with volunteers to create a welcoming, interesting and lasting legacy.

Current volunteering opportunities include, Research, Oral History and House Guides. For further information follow the 'Read more' link below or if you're interested in volunteering in an area not outlined above, contact Shannon Quigley on 015394 46139.
